He is the son of 1970’s racer Graziano Rossi. As a teenager, he began racing with karts, then moved on to minimotos (minibikes). In his second Grand Prix season in 1996, racing125cc class bikes, he won his first World Championship in Malaysia. Rossi had won 38 Grand Prix races before he was 23.<br /><br />In his second season Rossi moved to the 250cc class and won the 1999 World Championship. Moving to the premier 500cc class in 2000 and riding a Honda for the Nastro Azzuro Team, he finished second in the championship that year.
